Securing Your Starlink Network: A Practical Guide for Homes and Businesses

Starlink brings fast internet to places that were previously unconnected. However, a fast connection is only as safe as the network behind it. Most Starlink kits are left on their default settings after installation. This guide sets out the steps that should be taken to secure your network.

1. Secure your Starlink account

Your Starlink account controls your service, billing and router settings.

  • A strong, unique password should be used.
  • Two-factor authentication should be enabled where available.
  • Access to the Starlink app should be limited to trusted household members or staff.

2. Change the default Wi-Fi settings

  • The network name should be changed to one that does not identify you, your business or your address.
  • A long Wi-Fi password of at least 12 characters should be set.
  • The password should be changed when staff leave or after it has been widely shared.
  • Where your router supports it, the network can be hidden from the list of nearby networks. This keeps your connection out of sight of neighbours and passers-by. It should be noted that hiding a network improves privacy but does not replace a strong password, as hidden networks can still be detected with scanning tools.

3. Separate your networks

Not every device should share the same network.

  • Guests should be placed on a separate network where your router supports it.
  • In businesses, staff devices, point-of-sale systems and guest Wi-Fi should be kept apart.
  • Smart devices such as cameras and TVs should be isolated from computers holding sensitive data.

4. Consider your own router for business use

Starlink offers a Bypass Mode, which allows a business-grade router or firewall to be connected. This is recommended for lodges, offices and medical practices. It allows:

  • Firewall rules and content filtering
  • Separate networks (VLANs) for staff, guests and devices
  • Automatic failover between Starlink and fibre or mobile data

5. Protect every connected device

The router protects the network, but each device must also be protected.

  • Operating systems and apps should be kept up to date.
  • Endpoint protection should be installed on all computers.
  • Secure DNS filtering should be considered to block malicious websites.

6. Be careful when sharing your connection

Sharing Starlink with neighbours or tenants is common. It should be noted that all activity on the connection is linked to your account. Shared users should be placed on a separate network, and the arrangement should be checked against Starlink’s terms of service.

7. Protect the hardware

Starlink kits, particularly the Mini, are a target for theft.

  • The dish should be mounted securely and out of easy reach.
  • The kit should not be left unattended in vehicles.
  • A stolen kit should be reported to Starlink immediately so that it can be deactivated.
